今天收到了学校负责Summer Studentship的Dr. Michael Winikoff的回信，我两周前申请的Summer Studentship获得了批准，我幸运的入选了。

什么是Summer Studentship呢? 我也不知道怎么翻译，反正很类似今年Google搞的那个Summer of Code，CSIT在每年暑假(当然国内是放寒假了，别忘了我在澳洲 :P)都会搞一些研究课题，由导师辅导在8－10周内完成。这个机会主要是面向研究方向(research)的学生的，我实际是属于授课方向的(coursework)，所以能得到这么一个机会我还是很荣幸的。下面这个是申请页面上的官方介绍：

A studentship is a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience of research in computing, working closely with a staff member on an interesting and challenging project. Studentships often lead to further opportunities: past summer students have gone on to PhDs, to projects, or part-time work during the year, and to interesting challenging positions at the conclusion of their studies. A summer studentship looks excellent on your CV and helps differentiate you from the majority of job-seekers.

本次一共有40多个项目，也就是说有40多名学生参与。最终我参与的项目是：

Plugins to allow Automatic QuickTime publishing
Student: Wei Feng
Supervisor: Saied Tahaghoghi
Pre-requisite Knowledge Background: C, Perl, PHP, multimedia skills

Project in collaboration with Adrian Miles, the School of Applied Communication Aimed at integrating QuickTime video in web (HTTP and RTSP) contexts: integration of video into web based CMS (in the first instance blogs) and the development of new publishing/authoring/viewing contexts for web based video. Movable Type is a perl-based blog CMS. WordPress is a PHP based blog CMS.

This project is to write plugins that would allow:

1. Selection and upload of QuickTime clip.
2. Allow user selection of QuickTime embed tag options
3. Automatic generation of blog post and embed/object tag
4. Auto extraction of poster frames and embedding of a poster frame movie

Similar plugins could also be written for the blog component in Drupal and other open source CMS.

The student will be loaned an Apple PowerBook G4 notebook for use on this project.

呵呵，聪明的你已经知道我为什么选择了这个项目了吧。PHP是我的老本行，WP/MT/Drupal这些Blog我都再熟悉不过的了，这个课题研究的就是目前最热门的Podcasting。至于Perl，我刚刚好借这个机会有所提高和突破。

唯一遗憾的是，来信中也提到，由于学校经费紧张，我的这个项目是免费的:( 不然按照原计划，顺利完成的项目最后会有每周$250的奖金的。唉，郁闷啊。不过还是有个安慰奖的，这是唯一的一个学校会免费提供一台Apple Powerbook G4使用权的项目(可能因为涉及到Quicktime的处理?)，终于又可以和Apple亲密接触了。

只好借用信中最后一段自我安慰一下了：希望我能在这次活动中得到比奖金更多的东西－－经验，知识和乐趣。(I hope that you will be able to take up this opportunity and that you will find it interesting, educational, and hopefully even fun!)
